Who Sees?
When we love something or someone, who or what is it that loves? Is there really a person there? Or is there just love? Likewise, when we hear a crow cawing, who hears, ‘Caw! Caw!’? Who or what is reading these words right now? These are not philosophical questions. The answers lie beyond the capacity of thought and reveal themselves only in the light of awareness.
Years ago, as I described an experience to my teacher, Toni Packer, she asked me, ‘Who sees it?’ That simple question went deep in me until one night, while looking up at a full moon, the answer revealed itself and changed my life forever. The answer, of course, is that no one sees, no one hears, no one loves. Seeing sees, hearing hears, loving loves. To realize this fact and to live it is to be free of the burden of the construct of a personal self.
These newsletters arise from nowhere and point to nobody. The words therein come from personal experience but are not personal. It is not my intention to promote a belief system or suggest a particular spiritual pr actice other than the art of wonder in presence. The writings and drawing depict a spontaneous response to not knowing as it reveals itself in one’s everyday affairs.
Just This
The words and pictures in these posts arise out of loving presence, pure and simple, with the hope that they may find the same in the reader’s heart.Every Wednesday and Sunday morning, you will receive a short writing and hand-drawn illustration pertaining to meditative inquiry and the art of aware presence in everyday life.
Great to see you here on substack, Mike!
