Everyday Mind

-Zen MAster Nansen,Chinese Tang Dynasty, early 8th century

A monk asked Master Nansen, “What is the Way?” Nansen replied, “Every day mind is the Way.” When the monk asked if he should try to direct himself toward it, Nansen answered, “If you try to direct yourself toward it, you will go away from it.”

Old Master Nansen! Even though your answer is from long ago, it is still brand-new and alive in me. Reflecting on it right now is a doorway to not-knowing, which means meeting life as it happens, which means the end of seeking some other way to be, which means ‘Everyday mind’, which means fulfillment of your deepest desire, which means the end of desire, which means happiness.
